An introduction to workplace safety and health

Concise description:
A free course consisting of 6 lessons in workplace safety and health. The following lessons are presented: 1. Hazards in the workplace, 2. Measuring Risk, 3. Controlling Risk, 4. Safety Statement, 5. Reporting Accidents and Incidents, and 6. Responsibility. The course is developed towards young people (post primary education) to introduce them into the health risks of work. After the course, they are able to define safety hazards in the workplace, make a basic risk assessment and estimate risks, know the principles of prevention and identify control measures, know the content of a safety statement, identify key elements in reporting of accidents and the responsibilities of all people involved in the workplace. The course is presented in English only. It is necessary to register before the course can be approached. Apart from the course described here, the website offers other free courses also: see below: Related Material. Each lesson consists of simple texts, illustrations and questions, and an assessment. The questions and assessment are interactive and feedback is given on the answers. One may continue without answering the questions. In that case, however, no feedback is provided. The lessons can be followed effectively on-line only. That is, the text presented can also be printed, but the questions, assessment and feedback cannot. The material is primary meant for students. The level of the material is that of awareness and does not ask for any specific pre-knowledge in health care and / or occupational health. Teachers can monitor the progress of students using a free manager service (also available on the website). Some specific terms used are explained in a glossary. On start of each lesson, an advertisement (ad) appears on the screen for a considerable period (10-15 seconds). The user may choose for the (paid) option to not let these ads appear.

Prevention of violence and injuries

Concise description:
This set of lessons consists of a total of 21 lessons on injuries and violence. For injuries, such general topics as general principles, measuring and surveillance, and epidemiological analyses are dealt with. Besides, specific lessons are presented on road traffic injuries, drowning, falling and burning, child poisoning and injuries at the workplace. The lessons on violence comprise of violence against children, suicide, sexual violence, and violence committed by young persons. In addition, some lessons on care and rehabilitation are presented. All lessons can be followed on-line or downloaded in any order. The material is appropriate students, who have basic knowledge in epidemiology. Many terms used are explained in a glossary. Each lesson includes some self-assessments, including the answers. The material is also suitable for teachers who want to combine any number of lessons to make a customized learning program. A guideline for the latter group, however, is lacking. The course consists of ready-to-use material, that can be used on-line, or downloaded free of charge, printed and displayed. Logging in as a guest or after having registered is necessary. The lessons are available in two languages: English and Spanish.
