This free course is meant to enlarge a student’s knowledge of occupational hygiene practice in relation to fibrous dust. The course concentrates on asbestos, but other fibers are also covered. These fibers, such as machine made mineral fibers (MMMF), aramid fibers (Kevlar, Twaron), polyolefin fibers, and carbon fibers, are increasingly used in industry. The course provides understanding of the health risks associated with asbestos and other fibers, and gives also insight into methods of evaluation and control. Besides, practical skills for safely taking samples from bulk materials and for assessing fiber concentrations in the atmosphere are covered.
The material is appropriate for students, who have basic knowledge of biology and chemistry. For teachers, a guideline is added. The course consists of ready-to-use material, that can be downloaded free of charge, printed and displayed. No on-line interaction is necessary.

This module teaches how to recognize occupational and environmental cancer and how to respond to this finding. It is designed for primary healthcare providers (physicians, specialists, nurses) and anyone with an interest in recognizing and preventing occupational and environmental cancer. Insights are provided into how the recognition of cancer risks can lead to prevention. Case studies will highlight the essential points and allow the participants to apply the lessons learned.
The module also includes authoritative carcinogen lists, by chemical, occupation and cancer site, components of an exposure history and how to interpret this, and specific attention is paid to radon and asbestos.
The module consists of free-of-charge online interactive material. Prior to participating the course one needs to register. No download is necessary. The module takes between 1 and 2 hours.

Concise description:
A single lesson of less than 1 hour duration using a Powerpoint presentation and a task sheet. These explain the dangers of asbestos, the places where it might be found, and what actions are to be taken. The latter includes an explanation of the procedures how to deal if the presence of asbestos is suspected.
The lesson is aimed at young tradesmen, especially in the building industry.
A guideline (lesson plan) for instructors is added, as well as a task sheet including a lecturer’s answer sheet. A free-of charge pocket card for the trainees for quick consultation after the course can be ordered.
