Concise description:
An extensive manual especially developed for the education of nurses, doctors and other primary care personnel in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of acute pesticide poisoning. The manual consists of 9 chapters (modules). The first module discusses the general aspects of pesticides, such as definitions, pest and pesticide
classification, use and adverse effects of pesticides to health and environment. Subsequent modules teach the characteristics, toxicology, diagnosis and treatment of the various pesticide groups. The last module is about prevention.
The manual is available in Spanish only. Although originally intended for education in Bolivia, the information given can be used worldwide.
Each module in the manual starts with a short introduction and clarification of the learning objects. Each module ends with questions for self-evaluation and an exercise. Answers to the questions and exercise, however, are not provided.
The manual can be downloaded free of charge. It can be completed off-line, without interaction.
The material is meant for doctors and other healthcare professionals that are involved in recognition, treatment and prevention.

Concise description:
A short and interactive lesson for the primary health care to help recognize and diagnose asthma and its occupational origin, and to make aware of steps that need to follow after diagnosis. Further, it is taught what to advice patients at the time of diagnosis and throughout the course of illness, and where to find additional information. The lesson is presented in English and, for the legal part, refers to the situation in the United Kingdom specifically. It is necessary to register first before the lesson can be approached.
The lesson consists mainly of multiple choice questions around specific cases and short explanatory texts. Feedback on the answers is provided. A pre- and post-test is examined. A certificate is provided (and can be printed) if the final score is at least 70%. The lesson can be followed and displayed on-line only.
The material is meant for doctors and other healthcare professionals, as a help in their continuing education. It is well suited to be used for the education for medical students.
Apart from this free lesson that is offered by the provider, the website also offers a large amount of other free lessons and lessons not for free. Most of them are not related to occupational health.

Concise description:
This course aims to provide a thorough understanding of the techniques for assessing exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace. Besides, it gives an understanding of how exposure information can be used to assess risks. After having followed the course, someone is able to describe the general approach to health risk assessment, select appropriate equipment, devise a suitable sampling strategy, and present the results in a form useful for health risk assessment purposes.
The contents of the course somewhat in more detail: the biology and physiology of the most important human organs and systems are explained. Target organs for toxicological substances and the importance of the possible routes of exposure are explained. Basic toxicological concepts (among others: dose response curves) are refreshed. The steps in the risk assessment procedure are explained. Hygiene standards (international) and exposure limits calculations are clarified. Much attention is paid to air sampling theory and practice. Different types of air sampling analysis methods are mentioned, including spectrometry, spectrophotometry, and chromatography. Special attention is paid to the sampling of dusts (air-borne particles), vapors and gases.
The material is appropriate students, who have basic knowledge of biology and chemistry. For teachers, a guideline is added.
The course consists of ready-to-use material, that can be downloaded free of charge, printed and displayed. No on-line interaction is necessary.
The course is available in the English language. The student manual is available in English and Norwegian.

This free course is meant to enlarge a student’s knowledge of occupational hygiene practice in relation to fibrous dust. The course concentrates on asbestos, but other fibers are also covered. These fibers, such as machine made mineral fibers (MMMF), aramid fibers (Kevlar, Twaron), polyolefin fibers, and carbon fibers, are increasingly used in industry. The course provides understanding of the health risks associated with asbestos and other fibers, and gives also insight into methods of evaluation and control. Besides, practical skills for safely taking samples from bulk materials and for assessing fiber concentrations in the atmosphere are covered.
The material is appropriate for students, who have basic knowledge of biology and chemistry. For teachers, a guideline is added. The course consists of ready-to-use material, that can be downloaded free of charge, printed and displayed. No on-line interaction is necessary.

This module presents an introduction to basic toxicological principles. It is explained what is meant by toxicology, some history is depicted, and basic terms as dose, dose-response and dose-effect are illustrated. In addition, various examples of toxic agents in daily life and occupation are given.
A basic understanding of biology and chemistry is helpful for understanding the text.
The 47 pages can be followed online, but can also be downloaded and printed.

This course provides an introduction to health hazards caused by substances that are used at work. Basic toxicological terms and concepts (among others: dose response curves, toxicity testing), and types of health effects are explained. The biology and physiology of the most important human target organs and the possible routes and kinetics for toxic substances are clarified. A large variety of toxic substances is described, what their health effects can be, and where these hazardous substances are commonly used in industry. Some regulatory considerations are given and fundamental epidemiologic knowledge is refreshed. Biological hazards are clarified in a separate chapter.
The material is appropriate students, who have basic knowledge of biology and chemistry. For teachers, a guideline is added.

A single lesson of less than 1 hour duration using a Powerpoint presentation and a task sheet. These explain the dangers of asbestos, the places where it might be found, and what actions are to be taken. The latter includes an explanation of the procedures how to deal if the presence of asbestos is suspected.
The lesson is aimed at young tradesmen, especially in the building industry.
A guideline (lesson plan) for instructors is added, as well as a task sheet including a lecturer’s answer sheet. A free-of charge pocket card for the trainees for quick consultation after the course can be ordered.
