Occupational asthma: evidence based diagnosis and management

Concise description:
A short and interactive lesson for the primary health care to help recognize and diagnose asthma and its occupational origin, and to make aware of steps that need to follow after diagnosis. Further, it is taught what to advice patients at the time of diagnosis and throughout the course of illness, and where to find additional information. The lesson is presented in English and, for the legal part, refers to the situation in the United Kingdom specifically. It is necessary to register first before the lesson can be approached. The lesson consists mainly of multiple choice questions around specific cases and short explanatory texts. Feedback on the answers is provided. A pre- and post-test is examined. A certificate is provided (and can be printed) if the final score is at least 70%. The lesson can be followed and displayed on-line only. The material is meant for doctors and other healthcare professionals, as a help in their continuing education. It is well suited to be used for the education for medical students. Apart from this free lesson that is offered by the provider, the website also offers a large amount of other free lessons and lessons not for free. This website offers a set of free lessons on such topics as hepatitis infections in relation to needle sticking, vibration white finger in relation to forest work, prevention of further outbreaks of an infectious disease, over-use of the voice in noisy environments, diagnosis of abdominal pain, and risk and prevention in the mining industry. The lessons are presented in three languages: English, Spanish and German. It is necessary to register before the lessons can be approached. Apart from the free lessons, the website offers a large amount of others cases also, however, not for free. Each lesson consists of text, illustrations and questions. Before one can continue, these questions (open or multiple choice) must be answered, whereafter the feedback can be checked. The lessons can be followed and displayed on-line only. The level of the material is variable: some is meant for anyone who has basic knowledge in health care and occupational health. Other lessons demand for advanced knowledge in medicine. This lesson, designed more or less specifically for the situation in the UK, helps to create awareness for the beneficial effect of remaining in or returning to work. It also identifies the principles of effective rehabilitation and helps in the proper formulation of an advice (in a so-called fit note) to support the rehabilitation of a worker having health complaints. Checklists to quickly assess the impacts of health on work and work on health are introduced.
