Concise description:
This lesson raises awareness on the stages of musculoskeletal problems due to physical work. It shows examples in pictures of various situations (mainly in an industrial setting) and gives tips for improvement and prevention. It is designed primarily for workers themselves, and their managers or supervisors. The lesson consists of a free-of-charge online interactive material (mainly expositive). Virtual patients in Occupational Medicine

Concise description:
This website offers a set of free lessons on such topics as hepatitis infections in relation to needle sticking, vibration white finger in relation to forest work, prevention of further outbreaks of an infectious disease, over-use of the voice in noisy environments, diagnosis of abdominal pain, and risk and prevention in the mining industry. The lessons are presented in three languages: English, Spanish and German. It is necessary to register before the lessons can be approached. Apart from the free lessons, the website offers a large amount of others cases also, however, not for free. Each lesson consists of text, illustrations and questions. Before one can continue, these questions (open or multiple choice) must be answered, whereafter the feedback can be checked. The lessons can be followed and displayed on-line only. The level of the material is variable: some is meant for anyone who has basic knowledge in health care and occupational health. Other lessons demand for advanced knowledge in medicine. Some specific terms used are explained (however: not all).

Concise description:
A bilingual (Spanish and English) training module for employers with Hispanic workers. The goal is to increase the awareness that material handling is the cause of a large number of injuries and illnesses. It is learned to identify the most common unsafe material handling practices leading to the injuries and illnesses. The module gives also insight into the anatomy of the back and teaches to apply the correct lifting principles. Some assignments are included. The module can be downloaded from the website and printed for all employees. The material is developed as part of the PESO program. On the PESO website (for a link see the Comments block at the bottom of the complete description of this material) also slides for presenting and a handout in both English and Spanish can be found.

Ergonomics essentials

Concise description:
This course gives insight into the relation between the working human and his/her workplace, tools, handling of materials, and environment. It will deal with all those aspects that make work easier, more healthy and efficient, if applied in the right way. It will bring understanding why physical work may parallel a risk for health, especially for developing musculoskeletal disorders. It will teach how a different design of a workplace or tool, or a better control of the working environment can result in a more efficient work performance and a lower risk for these musculoskeletal problems. It also includes social and legal concerns, including current standards. The material is appropriate students, who have gained already a basic knowledge in recognition, evaluation and control of health risks. In addition, a guideline for instructors is added.The following is advised to persons not having experience with occupational hygiene and safety. To start effectively, basic comprehension how to recognize, evaluate and control health risk in relation to physical work and ergonomics is demanded. After the course, you have technical knowledge and practical skills to identify health hazards, to assess occupational exposure and to evaluate the effect of measures that are taken. The course consists of ready-to-use material, that can be downloaded free of charge, printed and displayed. No on-line interaction is necessary.
