Concise description:
This short lesson, designed for employers, managers, supervisors and front-line employees, teaches about mental health at work. It describes the impact of mental illness, the difference between mental illness and stress, and the major factors that put people at risk. Furthermore, it aims to recognize mental illness at work and to identify possible routes for the promotion of mental well-being. The lesson is to be followed on-line free of charge and consists of mainly expositive material. It takes about half an hour. The lesson is really meant to raise awareness. Incidentally, links to some further reading are given. Also some sources to underpin data and statements are given, however, mostly incomplete. Manual en Diagnóstico, Tratamiento y Prevención de Intoxicaciones Agudas por Plaguicidas (Manual on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of acute poisoning by pesticides)

Concise description:
An extensive manual especially developed for the education of nurses, doctors and other primary care personnel in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of acute pesticide poisoning. The manual consists of 9 chapters (modules). The first module discusses the general aspects of pesticides, such as definitions, pest and pesticide classification, use and adverse effects of pesticides to health and environment. Subsequent modules teach the characteristics, toxicology, diagnosis and treatment of the various pesticide groups. The last module is about prevention. The manual is available in Spanish only. Although originally intended for education in Bolivia, the information given can be used worldwide. Each module in the manual starts with a short introduction and clarification of the learning objects. Each module ends with questions for self-evaluation and an exercise. Answers to the questions and exercise, however, are not provided. The manual can be downloaded free of charge. It can be completed off-line, without interaction. The material is meant for doctors and other healthcare professionals that are involved in recognition, treatment and prevention.

Occupational asthma: evidence based diagnosis and management

Concise description:
A short and interactive lesson for the primary health care to help recognize and diagnose asthma and its occupational origin, and to make aware of steps that need to follow after diagnosis. Further, it is taught what to advice patients at the time of diagnosis and throughout the course of illness, and where to find additional information. The lesson is presented in English and, for the legal part, refers to the situation in the United Kingdom specifically. It is necessary to register first before the lesson can be approached. The lesson consists mainly of multiple choice questions around specific cases and short explanatory texts. Feedback on the answers is provided. A pre- and post-test is examined. A certificate is provided (and can be printed) if the final score is at least 70%. The lesson can be followed and displayed on-line only. The material is meant for doctors and other healthcare professionals, as a help in their continuing education. It is well suited to be used for the education for medical students. Apart from this free lesson that is offered by the provider, the website also offers a large amount of other free lessons and lessons not for free. Most of them are not related to occupational health.

This short lesson presents examples of the broad area of workplace violence, and the possible sources: which persons can be involved. In addition, the situations (physical and situational) of increased risk are shortly mentioned. Links for Canada are presented for learning about the employer’s obligations to prevent workplace violence. The lesson is to be followed on-line free of charge and consists of ready-to-use material. The text however can also be downloaded. The material is appropriate for any worker or manager. No download or registering is necessary. The lesson takes less than about half an hour. This lesson raises awareness on the stages of musculoskeletal problems due to physical work. It shows examples in pictures of various situations (mainly in an industrial setting) and gives tips for improvement and prevention. It is designed primarily for workers themselves, and their managers or supervisors. The lesson consists of a free-of-charge online interactive material (mainly expositive). An introduction to workplace safety and health

Concise description:
A free course consisting of 6 lessons in workplace safety and health. The following lessons are presented: 1. Hazards in the workplace, 2. Measuring Risk, 3. Controlling Risk, 4. Safety Statement, 5. Reporting Accidents and Incidents, and 6. Responsibility. The course is developed towards young people (post primary education) to introduce them into the health risks of work. After the course, they are able to define safety hazards in the workplace, make a basic risk assessment and estimate risks, know the principles of prevention and identify control measures, know the content of a safety statement, identify key elements in reporting of accidents and the responsibilities of all people involved in the workplace. The course is presented in English only. It is necessary to register before the course can be approached. Apart from the course described here, the website offers other free courses also: see below: Related Material. Each lesson consists of simple texts, illustrations and questions, and an assessment. The questions and assessment are interactive and feedback is given on the answers. One may continue without answering the questions. In that case, however, no feedback is provided. The lessons can be followed effectively on-line only. That is, the text presented can also be printed, but the questions, assessment and feedback cannot. The material is primary meant for students. The level of the material is that of awareness and does not ask for any specific pre-knowledge in health care and / or occupational health. Teachers can monitor the progress of students using a free manager service (also available on the website). Some specific terms used are explained in a glossary. On start of each lesson, an advertisement (ad) appears on the screen for a considerable period (10-15 seconds). The user may choose for the (paid) option to not let these ads appear.

Concise description:
This website offers a set of free lessons on such topics as hepatitis infections in relation to needle sticking, vibration white finger in relation to forest work, prevention of further outbreaks of an infectious disease, over-use of the voice in noisy environments, diagnosis of abdominal pain, and risk and prevention in the mining industry. The lessons are presented in three languages: English, Spanish and German. It is necessary to register before the lessons can be approached. Apart from the free lessons, the website offers a large amount of others cases also, however, not for free. Each lesson consists of text, illustrations and questions. Before one can continue, these questions (open or multiple choice) must be answered, whereafter the feedback can be checked. The lessons can be followed and displayed on-line only. The level of the material is variable: some is meant for anyone who has basic knowledge in health care and occupational health. Other lessons demand for advanced knowledge in medicine. Some specific terms used are explained (however: not all).

Prevention of violence and injuries

Concise description:
This set of lessons consists of a total of 21 lessons on injuries and violence. For injuries, such general topics as general principles, measuring and surveillance, and epidemiological analyses are dealt with. Besides, specific lessons are presented on road traffic injuries, drowning, falling and burning, child poisoning and injuries at the workplace. The lessons on violence comprise of violence against children, suicide, sexual violence, and violence committed by young persons. In addition, some lessons on care and rehabilitation are presented. All lessons can be followed on-line or downloaded in any order. The material is appropriate students, who have basic knowledge in epidemiology. Many terms used are explained in a glossary. Each lesson includes some self-assessments, including the answers. The material is also suitable for teachers who want to combine any number of lessons to make a customized learning program. A guideline for the latter group, however, is lacking. The course consists of ready-to-use material, that can be used on-line, or downloaded free of charge, printed and displayed. Logging in as a guest or after having registered is necessary. The lessons are available in two languages: English and Spanish.

Measurement of hazardous materials

Concise description:
This course aims to provide a thorough understanding of the techniques for assessing exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace. Besides, it gives an understanding of how exposure information can be used to assess risks. After having followed the course, someone is able to describe the general approach to health risk assessment, select appropriate equipment, devise a suitable sampling strategy, and present the results in a form useful for health risk assessment purposes. The contents of the course somewhat in more detail: the biology and physiology of the most important human organs and systems are explained. Target organs for toxicological substances and the importance of the possible routes of exposure are explained. Basic toxicological concepts (among others: dose response curves) are refreshed. The steps in the risk assessment procedure are explained. Hygiene standards (international) and exposure limits calculations are clarified. Much attention is paid to air sampling theory and practice. Different types of air sampling analysis methods are mentioned, including spectrometry, spectrophotometry, and chromatography. Special attention is paid to the sampling of dusts (air-borne particles), vapors and gases. The material is appropriate students, who have basic knowledge of biology and chemistry. For teachers, a guideline is added. The course consists of ready-to-use material, that can be downloaded free of charge, printed and displayed. No on-line interaction is necessary. The course is available in the English language. The student manual is available in English and Norwegian.

Measurement of hazardous materials

Asbestos and other fibers

Concise description:
This free course is meant to enlarge a student’s knowledge of occupational hygiene practice in relation to fibrous dust. The course concentrates on asbestos, but other fibers are also covered. These fibers, such as machine made mineral fibers (MMMF), aramid fibers (Kevlar, Twaron), polyolefin fibers, and carbon fibers, are increasingly used in industry. The course provides understanding of the health risks associated with asbestos and other fibers, and gives also insight into methods of evaluation and control. Besides, practical skills for safely taking samples from bulk materials and for assessing fiber concentrations in the atmosphere are covered. The material is appropriate for students, who have basic knowledge of biology and chemistry. For teachers, a guideline is added. The course consists of ready-to-use material, that can be downloaded free of charge, printed and displayed. No on-line interaction is necessary.
