Work Improvements in Small Enterprises (WISE) is a training program developed by the ILO to assist small and medium-sized enterprises in improving working conditions using simple, effective and low-cost techniques that provide direct benefits to owners and workers. The training emphasizes the link between good working conditions and productivity and the importance of employer-employee cooperation to achieving positive change. WISE was successfully introduced in over 20 countries in Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and Africa. To support WISE training several publications are available in multiple languages. A specific application of the WISE program is the highly successful WIND program for the agricultural sector.
WISE is highly participatory and promotes the adoption of local solutions for local problems. At the end of the training, participants build personalized action plans through the use of the WISE checklists. They are then supported to carry out and maintain planned improvements by volunteers/trainers and through the creation of a local WISE network.
WISE covers the following topics: (1) Materials storage and handling, (2) Workstation design, (3) Machine safety, (4) Control of hazardous substances, (5) Lighting, (6) Work-related welfare facilities, (7) Work premises, (8) Work organization, (9) Understanding productivity, (10) Managing and Motivating Employees, (11) Designing and managing working Time, (12) Managing Wages and Benefits, (13) Family-friendly measures, and (14) Creating a respectful workplace.
The material consists of two handbooks: a Trainer’s Guide and an Action Manual. The Trainer’s Guide gives the principles of the successful organization of the training, including preparation, training steps, detailed suggestions for lessons, activities and cases, examples for improvement, and potential questions and answers to them.
The Action Manual consists of an Action checklist and many examples of good practices, including motivation why.
The material is primarily meant to be used by a trainer / teacher in setting up participatory action-oriented training sessions. The Trainer’s Guide starts with an extensive description how to effectively use the manual, including tips for preparation and follow-up activities.
An introduction to the WISE program is available in English, French and Spanish.

Agriculture is one of the most hazardous sectors of work. Safety and health risks are numerous and diverse: manual handling of heavy materials and loads, strenuous work postures, long and irregular working hours, exposure to extreme weather conditions, pesticides and other agro-chemicals. Further, basic amenities for sanitation and welfare are frequently absent.
All of these hazards are increased because of the fact that in agriculture the "workplace" includes the family dwelling. Tools, fertilizers and pesticides are often
stocked in farmers' houses, increasing the risk exposure of all family members, especially children.
This WIND training handbook is designed to assist farmers in implementing improvements. There is an action-checklist as a powerful tool to help farmers find possible points for improvement in their way of living and working. There are given various solutions coming from earlier experiences of many WIND countries that are simple, inexpensive and therefore applicable, even on small farms.
It is advised that the handbook is used by the farmer, his/her family and their neighbours. In this way, practical experiences and ideas how to solve comparable
problems are shared.
Also a video is available, which can be used as an introduction to the handbook for implementation of the WIND programme. The video can be seen from the website (see the COMMENTS block below for a direct link).

This interactive lesson teaches about safety behavior, legislation and recognition of job-related hazards. Furthermore, the lesson is a guide in hazards that are common in the broad range of agricultural work, including working alone, violence, working with chemicals, slips and falls, lifting by hand, machinery and equipment, confined spaces, electricity, and handling animals. The lesson is especially made for new workers in agriculture, since these workers appear to have higher rates of injuries in the first months after starting their job. The situations and legal aspects describe the specific Canadian situation, but also hold more in general.
The lesson consists of three parts: (1) Introduction: recognition and laws, (2) Overview: safe working and safety programs, and (3) Examination. The lesson can followed on-line free of charge UNTIL NOVEMBER 2012 and consists of ready-to-use material. The text can also be downloaded. The material is appropriate for any worker in agriculture and no prerequisites are demanded. Registering is necessary before the lesson can be approached. The lesson can be followed in about 2 hours. It includes several questions, feedback on these and a self test.

Reporting Accidents and Incidents, and 6. Responsibility. The course is developed towards young people (post primary education) to introduce them into the health risks of work.
After the course, they are able to define safety hazards in the workplace, make a basic risk assessment and estimate risks, know the principles of prevention and identify control measures, know the content of a safety statement, identify key elements in reporting of accidents and the responsibilities of all people involved in the workplace.
The course is presented in English only. It is necessary to register before the course can be approached. Apart from the course described here, the website offers other free courses also: see below: Related Material.
Each lesson consists of simple texts, illustrations and questions, and an assessment. The questions and assessment are interactive and feedback is given on the answers. One may continue without answering the questions. In that case, however, no feedback is provided. The lessons can be followed effectively on-line only. That is, the text presented can also be printed, but the questions, assessment and feedback cannot.
The material is primary meant for students. The level of the material is that of awareness and does not ask for any specific pre-knowledge in health care and / or occupational health. Teachers can monitor the progress of students using a free manager service (also available on the website). Some specific terms used are explained in a glossary.
On start of each lesson, an advertisement (ad) appears on the screen for a considerable period (10-15 seconds). The user may choose for the (paid) option to not let these ads appear.

This material consists of a series of training manuals, made for educators of agricultural workers to tackle their health, safety and environmental problems. The manuals do not generally consist of ready-to-use material, but need adaptation (e.g. restriction of the topics, translation into local language, integration of local regulations, usage of examples that meet the participants’ experiences, or addition of the specific needs of the participants). The material merely pays attention to the approach and organization how to handle with hazards at work. Especially the so-called Trade Union’s approach is described in detail. The hazards themselves are listed shortly, but can be elaborated in more detail on initiative of the teacher.
The material is meant as a help for educators. An extensive educator’s guide is added that describes possibilities for preparation, planning, organization (including kinds of activities), and evaluation of meetings with participants.
The material (344 pages) can be downloaded and printed for immediate use.
